Introduction: What is Burundi?

Burundi is a small landlocked country in Eastern Africa. It shares borders with Rwanda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. . It is a primarily mountainous country with significant rainforest. Burundi is classified as a middle-income country by the World Bank, with a GDP per capita of US$1,000 in 2017. Its principal exports include sugar, tobacco, and coffee. Principal imports are textiles and machinery. The principal trading partners are Rwanda, Tanzania, and the DRC. The country’s name means “Land of Urundi” which was given by German explorers who came to the region in 1885.

Burundi’s coffee exports have been increasing over the years, and it has been able to export more than 1 million bags for the first time ever in 2016. This increase can be attributed to government-led initiatives such as the National Coffee Development Strategy which aims to promote sustainable growth for this sector. In 2017, Burundi’s coffee exports increased by 11% over the previous year. The country exported around 1.24 million bags of coffee that year.
